There are 6,350 businesses in Bury (2006). The rate of new VAT registrations at 11% exceeds the average for the North West at 9.6% and indicates that Bury has an entrepreneurial population.
There are 62,000 jobs in Bury, 41,000 being full time and the rest are part time (2006). The percentage of full time jobs, exceeding 31 hours a week, at 67% is slightly lower that the national average 71%.

The largest employment sectors are public administration, education and health at 21,600, followed by distribution hotels and restaurants and manufacturing. O2 is Bury's largest employer with a call centre in Radcliffe and high street store JD Sports has its head quarters in the borough. A number of specialist manufacturers can still be found such as Milliken who weave airbag fabrics. Carpet manufacture based in the borough are Cormar carpets, Rylux carpets and Milliken make carpet tiles. The James Halstead Group is the winner of a Queens Award for Enterprise for its international trade, distributing its Polyflor products all over the world. LGC, the Government chemist is based in the borough and has recently announced that it will move to new accomodation at the Green, Chamberhall.
